At Marejada, we take this cause beyond the screen: we gather public support so that more people know about it and support it, and we work to translate it into concrete progress, replicating the Península Mitre model with a petition that accompanies the effort.

Argentina and Chile have been working for over a decade to establish Domain 1 as a Marine Protected Area* , encompassing 670,000 km² in the Western Antarctic Peninsula, home to krill, penguins, and whales. The proposal already has scientific backing and has been submitted to the CCAMLR*. What's needed is global public pressure for its approval. The team sailed through the Drake Passage in search of the southernmost wave on the planet. What they found was a unique ecosystem, threatened by global warming and industrial fishing. Antarctica — Domain One is the film that emerged from that journey. The starting point of a campaign to protect it.
Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) serve to conserve biodiversity, protect critical habitats, and ensure the sustainability of ocean resources. They help to recover fish populations, increase climate resilience to global change, and promote sustainable tourism and scientific research.
*CCAMLR is the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (or CCAMLR in Spanish). It is an intergovernmental organization created in 1982 to protect the Southern Ocean ecosystem and regulate commercial fishing in the region.
WHY DOMAIN 1
Domain 1 — 670,000 km² in the Western Antarctic Peninsula and the Southern Scotia Arc — is one of the most important marine ecosystems on the planet. And one of the most threatened.
Global warming is accelerating changes that were unthinkable decades ago: loss of sea ice, altered living conditions for penguins, seals, and whales, and increasing pressure on Antarctic krill. This tiny crustacean sustains the entire Antarctic food chain. If its populations collapse, the cascading effect impacts virtually every species in the ecosystem.
Furthermore, 75% of Antarctic krill are concentrated in this area, which is also the area with the highest level of industrial fishing activity. The coincidence is significant: it is precisely where protection is most needed.
The proposed Marine Protected Area in Domain 1 was developed by scientists from the Argentine Antarctic Institute and the Chilean Antarctic Institute, and has been submitted to the CCAMLR since 2017. It creates zones where fishing is prohibited to reduce pressure on the ecosystem, protecting critical feeding and breeding habitats. It now awaits approval from member countries.

At each stop, a QR code invites viewers to watch the documentary for free and sign the petition for ocean protection.
